Combustion engines changed our world, delivering reliable power to heat & light our homes, run industries & civil infrastructure and deliver safe, fast travel on land, sea & air.
BUT, if not maintained & tested, they pollute, increase running costs & prematurely fail at great expense.
The easiest & quickest way to check engine performance is to tailpipe test - seeing is knowing and KANE exhaust gas analysers show what’s wrong in seconds.
Testing engines should be a daily experience - You get an instant engine, exhaust & cat assessment to know if an engine needs help.
KANE handheld exhaust gas analysers are as accurate as” big box in corner” analysers but more practical, letting you tail pipe test anywhere - on roads, in ships, down mines or up ladders.
KANE analyses are used worldwide by road side testing police, vehicle emergency rescue, engine research centres, motorsports, franchise car dealers, truck, train & off road maintenance teams - KANE is probably the world’s largest supplier of handheld engine analysers, also sold through & to OEMs like Snap-On Tools, Kia & Hyundai.
So why tail pipe test? Simple - it shows how an engine is performing, like a Doctor’s stethoscope tests heat rate & breathing efficiency.
Testing is non invasive - Insert probe in exhaust and see in seconds real time engine conditions & catalytic converter status.
Each gas measured tells a story
For example:
• If CO is over 0.5%, engine is fuel rich, wasting money & pollution
• If HC is over 100ppm, engine will misfire
• If CO2 is under 14%, engine efficiency is too low
• If O2 is over 1%, engine is lean with too much air
• If NOx is over 100ppm, engine is lean & too hot
• If Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) is over 14.7:1 or Lambda over 1, engine is lean
• If Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) is under 14.7:1 or Lambda under 1, engine is fuel rich
NOx tail pipe testing also confirms if a diesel engine’s AD blue / DEF system works - when faulty, it identifies if the Ad blue / DEF injector or NOx sensors are faulty - see our “Why tail pipe test Diesels for NOX” fact sheet.
CO tail pipe testing also stops Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning - CO (The Silent Killer) causes brain damage and cannot be reversed.
A simple exhaust test then cabin test with your analyser or KANE CO monitor logger simultaneously linked to your analyser will confirm if CO is leaking into the cabin - see our “Why tail pipe & cab test for CO” fact sheet.
KANE handheld exhaust gas analysers confirm in real time your engine status - testing is easy, quick & non invasive (simply insert probe in engine exhaust) and can also be done while driving a vehicle in real world conditions.
